Anthaea-Grace Patricia Dennis, a 12-year-old student from Ottawa, Canada, has become the youngest person in Canadian history to graduate from college. She happily received her Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree from the University of Ottawa this month.

Anthaea began the demanding university program at the age of nine and completed it in three years. Because she was young and bright, she encountered prejudice and expectations about her demeanour and speech at university. But she didn’t let them slow her down.

Johanna Dennis, Anthaea’s mother, has always been supportive of her daughter since she first discovered her exceptional abilities when she was two years old. Johanna, as a law professor and a single mother, was instrumental in developing Anthaea’s abilities and assuring her success.

Furthermore, Anthaea has already established herself as a researcher, having produced a 40-page thesis on the association between cerebellar functional activity and handedness. She presented her research findings at the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biology Symposium, which she accomplished in less than a year.

Anthaea is a talented musician in addition to her outstanding academic achievements. She likes to spend time with her kitties and watch TV with her family.

A Toronto teacher has become the province’s — and possibly the country’s — first Black president of a provincial teacher affiliate union. Karen Brown was elected president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) at the union’s annual meeting on Tuesday. According to a press release, Brown has been the union’s vice-president since 2015 and was first elected to the provincial executive team in 2009. Brown expects to lead with the passion and resolve necessary to ensure ETFO members are protected and supported. She joined the Toronto District School Board in 1993 as a teacher and is also a qualified early childhood educator. In 2008, she earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in adaptive instruction and special education. In addition to her positions as chief negotiator, grievance officer, benefits co-ordinator, and strike team co-ordinator, she served as vice-president of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto from 2003 to 2012. Brown is a member of the Women’s Advisory Committee of the Canadian Labour Congress, a governor of the Ontario Teacher’s Federation, a member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, and a volunteer with the Canadian Alliance of Black Educators.

In this sweeping debut, Asha Bromfield takes readers to the heart of Jamaica, and into the soul of a girl coming to terms with her family, and herself, set against the backdrop of a hurricane.

Tilla has spent her entire life trying to make her father love her. But every six months, he leaves their family and returns to his true home: the island of Jamaica.

When Tilla’s mother tells her she’ll be spending the summer on the island, Tilla dreads the idea of seeing him again, but longs to discover what life in Jamaica has always held for him.

In an unexpected turn of events, Tilla is forced to face the storm that unravels in her own life as she learns about the dark secrets that lie beyond the veil of paradise―all in the midst of an impending hurricane.

Hurricane Summer is a powerful coming of age story that deals with colorism, classism, young love, the father-daughter dynamic―and what it means to discover your own voice in the center of complete destruction.
