With the new docuseries, Black Life: A Canadian History, homegrown hockey great P.K. Subban intends to educate people and stimulate dialogue. The defenceman, who grew up in Toronto, is an executive producer on the newly announced eight-part project, which will premiere in 2023 on CBC TV and CBC Gem. Former Governor General Michaelle Jean and rapper-broadcaster Shad, who serve as cultural consultants, were hired by showrunner Leslie Norville of Studio 112 and Miranda de Pencier of Northwood Entertainment. Each one-hour episode will be directed by a different Black Canadian director and will span 400 years of the African-American experience in Canada. Subban is unsure whether he will appear on camera for the project, but believes his story is inextricably linked to it. The most important thing, he says, is that viewers learn about Canada’s entire history through the series.
